TELECOASTS
LOYAL is pleased to present Telecoasts, a solo exhibition by Chanel Khoury comprised of three new oil paintings that further Khoury’s exploration of constructed worlds and the systems that shape them. This is the Los Angeles artist’s second solo exhibition with the gallery.
Chanel Khoury’s paintings occupy spaces that are precise and expansive. Reflective and translucent forms expand through environments governed by their own spatial logic, their material qualities seeming to dissolve the distinction between solid and fluid. Coastlines and bodies of water reappear as points of orientation, suggesting oasis or mirage. Each contains a custom-calibrated sky, its light determined by a specific place and moment in history. Repeated reflections unsettle any stable sense of scale or position.
Khoury’s sources range from sacred architecture to deep-sea organisms such as siphonophores and comb jellies, and lossy screen captures. A nod to the siphonophore runs throughout: a primordial creature whose genetically identical bodies self-clone and specialize to function as a single distributed organism. The paintings echo this collective intelligence, as structures appear to receive and transmit divine information, gradually taking on the qualities of what they seek. Ancient forms of organization sit alongside systems made possible by contemporary technology, and each rendered construction is repainted by hand, stroke by stroke.
The three paintings are presented together in LOYAL’s nineteenth-century chapel in Lund, a space built for ritual and contemplation. Its architecture establishes a system of proportion, repetition, symmetry, and orientation around the work. As distinctions between the ancient and technological begin to blur, Khoury proposes that the distant past and distant future may be circular rather than linear
